Storyboard

A Storyboard is an ordered collection of camera shots used for planning filming. Typically, these shots aren't available when filming is being planned, so sketches are usually used. Storyboards are used to plan blocking of shots, lens selection, camera placement, pacing and other technical aspects of storytelling.

Celtx's support for storyboarding is via the Storyboard Editor. A project can have multiple storyboards, and storyboards can have multiple sequences, each containing multiple shots or images. Descriptions can be added, reordering is via drag and drop, landscape (3X3) or portrait (2X3) printing is available, and your storyboard can be played using the built-in image viewer.

The Storyboard Toolbar has two buttons - Add Sequence and Play Storyboard.

A sequence is an ordered collection of camera shots. Sequences are created by pressing the Add Sequence button on the Storyboard Toolbar, renamed by clicking on the sequence name, moved by dragging and dropping within the Storyboard Navigator, or deleted by clicking on the Delete button on the sequence titlebar.

Images or shots are added by clicking on the dashed image place-holder and selecting an image from the dialog box. Shots have a caption which defaults to the filename; it can be changed by clicking on the caption. Shots can be moved within or even between sequences by dragging and dropping within the Storyboard Navigator, or deleted by clicking on the subtle "X" button that appears on the image when the mouse is moved over it.

Note that images are compressed horizontally and/or vertically to fit the panels in the storyboard, whereas they are stretched anamorphically to fit the image viewer. The storyboard panels have a 4:3 aspect ratio, have a white boarder placed around them and are 160 x 120 pixels.

The storyboards are stored in the file storyboard.xml. The ratio is stored in the ratio tag, images with a ratio value of "4x3" have that aspect ratio honoured; all others are ignored and the image is stretched to fit the width of the window.
