Exporting to Final Draft

Exporting to Final Draft isn't as smooth as it could be but there are a few options.

Through Text

By far the easiest way to get a Celtx script into Final Draft is by exporting it from Celtx as a text file.

  1. Open The Text File - In Final Draft, choose File > Open and choose the text file.
  2. Choose Script Format - Final Draft will ask you if you want to import as Text or Script. Choose Script.
  3. Choose Template - Your script will now be imported, but you may want to change the Final Draft screenplay template by going to Format > Elements and choosing a new template.

This has been tested with Final Draft 8.

Alternate Methods

Through HTML

Another method is to export as HTML, then cut and paste from a web browser or Word into Final Draft. [1] Significant clean up within Final Draft may still be necessary.

  • Selecting Tools > Format Assistant. Run the Format Assistant on the entire document to delete unwanted blank elements
  • Selecting Tools > Reformat. Manually choose how each element should be formatted. This is very tedious -- it typically takes no less than 90 minutes to fix a Celtx to Final Draft transfer -- but it's doable. When reformatting in Final Draft, it helps to choose fixed finger positions on the keyboard for each element. Put on some appropriate music. Bite down hard. Get it done.

Through PDF

Another method is to save your script as a PDF> Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro> Save As RTF from Acrobat Pro. You can then open up the RTF version of your script in Final Draft. You may have to clean up a few items, but most of your formatting will be preserved.

Through Celtx Tools App

If you're using a version of Final Draft that understands the FDX file format (e.g. Final Draft 8), another option is to use a third-party application called Celtx Tools which will allow you to export your screenplay as an FDX file which can then be opened in Final Draft.
