Screenshots serve many purposes - they can help debug (comparing a user's screen with the one in the screenshot), making it easier to follow a tutorial (step by step pointers) and outlining the various features of a program with demonstrations of how the program will react.

Taking screenshots is easy, just use the Print Screen (sometimes abbreviated as "PrtScn") button on your keyboard to copy your shot to a clipboard, then paste as a new image into your favorite graphics application. PNG images are strongly preferred due to their vast improvement over GIF in compression. Avoid the use of JPG, it looks funny because it does photos well but screenshots poorly.
ImageShack or your own webhost make great places to store the screenshots!
